Divination and Body Mapping Divination is a ritual-based methodology grounded in African cosmologies that conceptualise the body as a repository of personal, intergenerational, and collective memory. The methodology is designed to generate meaning through embodied sensation and symbolic inquiry rather than prediction.
Other than challenging the Cartesian separation of the body, mind and soul, this approach resists the exclusive focus on biomedical and Western psychological frameworks which tend to locate meaning solely at the level of the individual.
Practice involves the following steps:
Open-ended, non-directive questions are used to explore the symbolic and relational meaning of the mapped bodily site (e.g., ancestral, collective, or personal dimensions).
Participants mark the identified bodily site on a drawn or imagined body outline, noting associated sensations, emotions, images, memories, or words.
Participants engage in a guided body scan to identify areas of sensation, absence, or tension.
Insights are articulated by participants and reflected back by the facilitator without interpretation or correction. The mapped body and accompanying narratives constitute a process of reflection, reconnection and re-storying.
This intervention consists of 4 sessions of a trauma-informed somatic experiencing approach which weaves together all strands of my academic training, ancestral gifts and lived experience.
